First wave feminism was the tale of the middle-class white woman.

It failed to acknowledge the other.

The poor. The black. The disabled. The LGBTQ+.

The Brooklyn Museum has opened a new exhibit entitled We Wanted A Revolution: Black Radical Women, 1965-85 recounting the story of Second Wave Feminism, particularly the black feminist movement.

The exhibit is speckled with brilliant color, mixed media, audio and articles from the '70s, all of which are supplemented by history artistically cultivated in order to compose a spectacularly provocative work.

We Wanted A Revolution draws on social, political and economic commentary and includes the work of several famous black female artists.

It tells the story of resistance through the medium of art.

The museum describes the exhibition as an “exhibition to highlight the voices and experiences of women of color — distinct from the primarily white, middle-class mainstream feminist movement — in order to reorient conversations around race, feminism, political action, art production, and art history.”

If you find yourself in Brooklyn anytime between now and September 17, definitely go check out this exhibit for yourself.
