For decades on end, the Black community has searched high and low for the right skin-care products, only to be introduced to more brands that make common skin-care issues even worse than they previously were. And though we still have a ways to go when it comes to diversifying the beauty industry, there are many brands out there that have made it their mission to change by inducing proven science and all-natural ingredients within their products.
Now that it’s Black History Month, it’s only right that we continue to support the brands that are for us and made by us. If you're looking for the perfect skin-care products that cater to your everyday skin-care needs, there's no need to fret, we've got you covered with a special skincare edit that serves to highlight and support our community and our community's needs.
1. Melé
Founded in 2018, Esi Eggleston-Bracey and Sarah Irby noticed huge representation disparities in the beauty industry. As a result of not seeing common skin-care issues being represented, the dynamic duo decided to create a brand that incorporates scientifically-proven ingredients known to help reduce issues such as hyperpigmentation and inflammation. Melé is helping to address and identify the needs of the Black community with expert-approved formulas that are catered to help enrich melanin skin.
2. 54 Thrones
As most notably seen on the world-renowned show, Shark Tank, 54 Thrones, is a clean beauty brand that’s handcrafted to cater directly to the African diaspora. By honoring the use of sustainable materials and ingredients, this all-natural skin-care brand gives back to the planet by providing a wide range of facial masks, ointments and other treatments that derive from the earth.
3. Hyper Skin
Founder Desiree Verdejo suffered from severe acne and dark spots as an early adolescent. She often noticed that the skin-care realm was not solving the issues she so often faced and wanted to create a brand that represented girls just like her. To cater to the everyday needs of Black skin, Hyper Skin is changing the beauty industry by incorporating natural ingredients in its products, such as Vitamin C, bearberry, licorice and kojic acid — scientifically-proven ingredients that are known to significantly reduce dark spots and hyperpigmentation.
4. Rose Ingleton MD

With a wide range of serums, creams and facial mists, this Gen Z brand serves to help reduce the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation by injecting a trio of acne-fighting formulas that include tranexamic acid, azelaic acid and niacinamide.
9. GlowRx Skincare
GlowRx Skincare is a Black-owned and female-led brand that’s made it their mission to address the skin-care issues young Black adults face that often go unnoticed. Dr. Lorraine Beraho, the founder of GlowRx, has surrounded her products with a unique combination of skin-care technology and non-toxic ingredients that help to naturally bring out the skin’s inner glow.
10. Hanahana Beauty
With Shea Butter as the ultimate go-to product in her household, the founder of Hanahana Beauty, Abena Boamah-Acheampong, created her brand with an all-natural viewpoint. Honing in on a mission of “disrupting the global beauty industry,” Boamah-Acheampong uses homemade products to create a fair sourced approach that helps to uplift Black women and larger marginalized communities through brand representation.
Now that Black History Month is finally here, it’s only right that we continue to support the brands that are catering to our everyday skin-care needs, as well as continuing to support our community in a positive way.
