New Jersey runner Athing Mu might break a world record before she graduates from high school.

The 16-year-old ran the 600-meter race at the USA Track and Field Indoor Championships on Sunday and finished with a time of 1:23:57, reports The Trentonian. Her time was the fastest finish for a woman in American history. Additionally, she was only 0.13 seconds away from breaking the world record.

Mu’s finish time stunned many, herself included.

“I’m super shocked. At first when I was taking a picture next to the timing, I thought it was just another high school record,” Mu told Runner’s World. “I looked back and it said ‘AR’ [American record] and I also didn’t see the time, 1:23, so I was just like oh my gosh, it’s crazy. It literally brought me to tears.”

Trentonian Running Club coach King Jennings was also shocked.

“The time surprised me,” said Jennings. “I thought it would take about 2:25, maybe 24.9, somewhere around there it would take to win it. But the 23 just blew my mind.”

Mu bested Raevyn Rogers, a track fave, but the latter isn’t a sore loser.

“As I reflect, I couldn’t be anymore happier with my indoor season,” Rogers tweeted. “Runner up, a PR [personal record] & a drop of two seconds within 24hrs. I can say I’m so happy to have met @athiiing way before this race & to get to know how beautiful she truly is congratulations on an amazing indoor season.”

Mu’s accomplishments don’t stop at this race. Last summer, she became the first athlete ever to win four gold medals at the Junior Olympics. When asked about the full Olympics, she was humble.

“We’re just going to have to see what happens when we get there,” she told The Trentonian.

In addition to her running, Mu has dreams of going into the medical field. She originally wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon, but she’s weighing her options.

“I’m still in the surgeon mode, but I might be switching it up to neuro maybe. I don’t know,” she said.
