Absolutely no surprises here – not for me anyway. Every performance and film I expected to be nominated was nominated – specifically amongst black actors, actresses and films.

Notable omissions that I’m sure some will be talking about this morning: Idris Elba and Forest Whitaker in the Best Actor category (I didn’t expect either of them to be nominated. Of the 3 black actors who were contenders, Chiwetel Ejiofor had the most buzz going into this morning’s announcement); Oprah Winfrey in the Best Supporting Actress category (it was either going to be her or Lupita Nyong’o in that category, and Lupita was all-too obvious a pick); Lee Daniels in the Best Director category (as someone who didn’t really care for The Butler, I’m not at all surprised that it didn’t receive any nominations, in any categories).

No nominations for Fruitvale Station either; and no surprise there either. It’s really been left out from much of the major awards season chatter, in favor of indie accolades.

I would’ve loved to see Bradford Young get a Best Cinematography nomination for his work in Mother Of George, and let’s not forget he also shot Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, which was also released last year. But neither film was ever really in contention for any awards unfortunately. But I will say that a Best Cinematography Oscar is in his future.

And finally, it was good to see 20 Feet From Stardom and The Square receive nominations in the Best Documentary category. God Loves Uganda, which was also shortlisted last month, wasn’t so lucky however.

So who did pick up nominations:

Barkad Abdi Best Supporting Actor for Captain Phillips

Lupita Nyong’o Best Supporting Actress for 12 Years A Slave

John Ridley Best Adapted Screenplay for 12 Years A Slave

The Square Best Documentary

20 Feet From Stardom Best Documentary

Chiwetel Ejiofor Best Actor for 12 Years A Slave
