Storytelling is one of the most important tools that can be instrumental in creating change, conversation or simply allowing people to be seen. Those of us who do not fit into the rigid confines of what a society drenched in white supremacy finds acceptable are oftentimes not depicted in the larger picture of media representation, especially when it comes to television. Our melanin-deficient peers may be able to turn on the TV screen and see their whole lives played out in front of the world, but we, Black people, do not get the privilege. Even more so when we have intersecting identities including toting the lines of being a Black woman or being Black and queer. While there is still a long way to go, we’ve made some strides, and it’s important to celebrate said milestones.
While Black creatives have been producing television content for years that actualizes many of our lives' stories, it seems as if we are seeing that now more than ever. It’s a beautiful thing, and we’ve created a list of eight Black-led shows that you should definitely tune into.
1. Harlem
2. Run The World
3. Twenties
4. First Wives Club
5. Atlanta
6. Snowfall
7. Sistas
8. Power Book II: Ghost
As we continue to see an influx of Black stories told by Black creators, we must continue to support them. The onus of storytelling isn’t solely on the creators — it’s also on our community to ensure these creators continue to feel supported and empowered to keep telling said stories.
