Former NFL star Aaron Hernandez was found dead in prison after committing suicide, officials say.

Hernandez, 27, was found unresponsive around 3 a.m. Wednesday morning.

The former New England Patriots TE was serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the  2013 murder of Odin Lloyd. Just a few days ago, he was also acquitted in the double murder of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado in 2012.

Reports as Massachusetts State Police are still investigating at the prison.

A statement from officials reads, "Mr. Hernandez was in a single cell in a general population unit. Mr. Hernandez hanged himself utilizing a bedsheet that he attached to his cell window. Mr. Hernandez also attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with various items.”

A spokesperson for the New England Patriots, who are headed to the White House today, told ESPN: "We are aware of the reports, but I don't anticipate that we will be commenting today."
