The holiday may not be recognized throughout the entire state. Counties and municipalities can elect to observe Dec. 1 as a day to honor Mrs. Parks.
The bill was introduced by Sen. Vivian Figures, a Democrat from Mobile and must now be signed into law by the governor. December 1 marks the date Parks was arrested after refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on a bus in Montgomery in 1955. The arrest marked the beginning of the year-long Montgomery Bus Boycott that ushered in the Civil Rights Movement.
America has a long way to go, but where it has come from is thanks to the courage of men and women like Rosa Parks.
