A church sign in Alabama is causing quite the stir within the community.
Pastor Michael Jordan, who presides over New Era Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, is standing by a new sign display at his church.
It reads “a Black vote for Trump is mental illness…a white vote for Trump is pure racism.”
Pastor Jordan told WZDX News that “God motivates me to take a stand for what’s right…they call me a racist, look in the White House."
Trump supporter Daxton Kirk is among those outraged about the sign. He told reporters that he’s reached out to local city officials in an effort to have it removed.
“You should not be able to come into a building and feel like you’re hated…just because you came here to worship the Lord,” Kirk said.
This sign isn’t the first that Pastor Jordan has used to get his message across. According to AL.com, he sparked controversy last year for a sign that said, "Black folks need to stay out of white churches."
The sign was in response to an announcement by The Church of the Highlands, a megachurch that reaches more than 40,000 people, of its intent to open a church in a high-crime neighborhood in Birmingham.
Jordan defended the sign by stating, "It's a slavemaster church…I call it plantation religion, slavemaster religion. The white rich folks start a church and put a Black pastor in charge of it."
In 2013, following George Zimmerman’s acquittal for the murder of unarmed Black teen Trayvon Martin, the church reacted to the case with a sign that read, “George Zimmerman jury supported white racism.”
City officials have not yet responded to requests to have the most recent sign removed.
