An employee was recently terminated from a Kansas City IHOP after a black customer discovered the n-word printed on her receipt, The Kansas City Star reports.

Maya Thomas was given the receipt with her to-go order on April 13, but didn’t notice the word until the next day. She called the store to complain, and received a $10 gift card in the mail a few days later.

"I think that's really what made her mad," Thomas' mother said. "Of all the things you could call someone, you call them that. And then the way you deal with it is by giving them 10 dollars?"

Thomas’ mom says she believes her “timid, shy” daughter kept the incident from her for days because she didn’t want to cause trouble. The gift card seemed to change her mind.

"She seemed distraught and upset when she showed it to me," Thomas' mother says. "And of course it got me pissed."

Thomas' mother posted a picture of the receipt on Facebook and it was shared over 400 times.

According to Stephanie Peterson, an IHOP spokesperson, the restaurant took swift action.

“The franchisee was made aware on the 13th, an investigation was launched that same day and the server was terminated," Peterson said. Peterson also said a senior-level manager personally apologized to Thomas.

The employee was also black, according to an IHOP official.

Thomas and her mother didn’t know about the firing until they were informed of it by the Star.

"That's great," Thomas' mother said. "I think they're handling this well."

IHOP President Darren Rebelez released a statement condemning the server’s actions.

“The action taken by the server at this restaurant is inexcusable," Rebelez said. "IHOP and its franchisees do not and will not tolerate racism, bigotry or harassment of any kind.”
