16-year old Aries Clark was shot and killed by Arkansas police in front of a homeless shelter for youth in Marion, Arkansas on Tuesday, July 25, 2017.
Clark was shot in front of East Arkansas Youth Services' building around 7:08 p.m. according to KATV and Fox News. After being shot, Clark was brought to the local hospital, and died of his wounds there shortly after.
The Arkansas police have stated that the officers who shot Clark were responding to an emergency call, but no other information has been officially released as to why the officers shot the teen. At this time, it is also unclear what the emergency call was about.
The facility director of East Arkansas Youth Services claims that Clark was not a current resident of the facility, but said that the teen did occasionally receive help from the facility.
Some reports have referred to Clark as a runaway; KATV reports that his mother told them that she sought help for her son's troubled behavior at the center.
Again, details of the shooting are still emerging, but Clark’s cousin, Chris Clark, told local Fox News that the shooting happened like this: “[Aries] held a BB gun in the air, and they just took him down on sight.”
Fox News also reports that although teens and health professionals were inside the facility during the shooting, no one was injured, besides Clark.
The Arkansas State Police has taken charge of the investigation into the shooting, and will turn over all results to Arkansas state prosecutors. The names of the officers involved in the shooting haven't been released, but both officers are currently on paid administrative leave.
State prosecutors will evaluate the police's findings to determine whether or not charges will be filed against the two police officers involved in the killing.
