An Atlanta teen will be joining Harvard’s Class of 2023, becoming one of only 935 students accepted in the early admissions cycle, which the university said may be the most competitive in Harvard history.

High school senior Osazi Al Khaliq announced on Twitter that he would be attending the university next fall, something he’s waited for his entire life.

This won't be Khaliq’s first time at Harvard. Over the summer, he made history at the Ivy League school when he and his team returned to Atlanta as debate champions. Khaliq was one of 25 scholars chosen to participate in the Harvard Debate Council Diversity Project (HDCDP), a program designed to funnel students of color into a prestigious summer residency at Harvard College. Khaliq and his fellow team members competed with students from all over the world

Now, the scholar will be returning, this time as a student.

Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Meria Joel Carstarphen tweeted her excitement for the future Harvard student.

Khaliq is especially excited about his acceptance, but he also gives much of the praise to the HDCDP for helping him reach his goal.

“It is because of the sense of purpose and validation that the HDCDP has instilled within me that positioned me to be admitted into the Harvard College Class of 2023," he said. "Being accepted into Harvard is a testament to how much the Diversity Project has cultivated within me a sense of academic excellence, cultural pride and community leadership.”
