Just when we thought the Trump administration couldn’t get lower, Attorney General Jeff Sessions made a joke about family separation during a speech.

Sessions was speaking to a crowd at an event for the conservative Criminal Justice Legal Foundation on Tuesday when he accused liberals of being hypocrites in their responses to Trump’s immigration policies, reports CBS

"The rhetoric we hear from the other side on this issue — as on so many others — has become radicalized.  We hear views on television today that are on the lunatic fringe. And what is perhaps more galling is the hypocrisy,” he said.

Sessions went on, accusing liberals of being exclusive while arguing for looser borders.

“These same people live in gated communities many of them and are featured at events where you have to have an ID even to even come in and hear them speak — they like a little security around themselves. And if you try to scale the fence, believe me, they'll be only too happy to have you arrested and separated from your children, I would like to see that," Sessions said, drawing laughs from the crowd.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order to stop families from being separated on June 20, reversing the zero-tolerance policy he and Sessions instituted in April.  Sessions has been a staunch defender of the zero-tolerance policy, despite public outcry.

"If you cross this border unlawfully, then we will prosecute you. It's that simple," Sessions said in April, according to NPR. "If you smuggle illegal aliens across our border, then we will prosecute you. If you are smuggling a child, then we will prosecute you and that child will be separated from you as required by law. If you don't like that, then don't smuggle children over our border."
