Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA) — who serves as the House's Financial Services Chair — is teaming up with a staff of House Democrats, including Intelligence Chair Adam Schiff, to investigate President Trump's alleged dealings with Deutsche Bank.
Waters is working with an investigator well versed in money laundering issues, who was also in charge of the Senate’s probes into Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase.
According to POLITICO, Democrats have concerns over why Deutsche Bank lent Trump's organization money, at a time when other banks had refused, and whether Russia was somehow involved. In his most recent financial disclosure filing, Trump said he owes Deutsche Bank at least $130 million.
“There's a heightened need to look into anything that could compromise the president or the country, particularly if it's not being investigated elsewhere," Schiff told POLITICO. "I don't know that to be the case, but I just haven't seen any external signs that that's happening."
Last week, Bloomberg News reported Deutsche Bank executives were concerned following the 2016 U.S. election, that Trump's organization would "default" on repaying $340 million in loans. The management board was so nervous they considered extending the repayment time to after a possible second term in 2025.
One of the people on the board said the bank decided against restructuring the loans for the Trump Organization, choosing instead not to pursue any new business with Trump during his time as President.
"Members of the bank’s management board, including then-Chief Executive Officer John Cryan, were leery of the public relations disaster they would face if they went after the assets of a sitting president," Bloomberg reported.
A spokesperson for Deutsche Bank declined to comment on the Mueller investigation, but said the bank "takes its legal obligations seriously and remains committed to cooperating with authorized investigations." Inquiries to The White House were referred to The Trump Organization, which did not respond about the financial matters.
