Congresswoman Maxine Waters, D-Calif., harangued President Donald Trump over his handling of the coronavirus outbreak Monday, criticizing his competence on the matter and his refusal to lean on the expert council.

Trump's handling of the coronavirus pandemic has been largely questionable and even, dangerous. The president's initial response to the outbreak was lackadaisical, and he's shared misinformation surrounding the pandemic on multiple occasions.

In a thread of tweets, Waters called out the president for what she deemed as mishandled federal efforts against the virus as local governments across the nation struggle to find the resources to combat COVID-19.

“Trump, stop congratulating yourself! You’re a failure & you've mishandled this #COVID19 disaster! You're not knowledgeable & you don’t know more than experts & generals," she wrote. "Your ignorance & incompetence are appalling & you continue to demonstrate that every time you open your mouth!”

Waters also accused Trump of destroying a National Security Council unit tasked with preparing for a pandemic-level event, but former national security advisors have since come forward and said the unit was dissolved into other initiatives to support streamlining efforts of the National Security Council.

"Trump, since you destroyed the WH unit designed to plan for pandemics like #COVID19, you need to stop being duplicitous about the DPA & get more corps to develop masks, respirators, & everything needed to protect hospital workers trying to save lives. Get your act together!" she tweeted.

In another tweet, Waters challenged the 45th president's initial confidence that America could resume normal activity by Easter to reinvigorate the economy. He later changed his tune, and the government announced it would extend social distancing guidelines until April 30.

"Trump, so now you’re expanding the social distancing order? Another correction b/c of your ignorant hunches. You said we'd be safe by Easter!" the 81-year-old wrote. "Experts always have to clean up after your 'hunches.' Keep your hunches 2 yourself & don’t waste experts' time correcting your stupidity!"

The Trump administration has launched a public-private partnership called Project Airbridge to swiftly deliver medical supplies to the U.S. from other countries. The first package of equipment arrived in New York Sunday and contained 80 tons of material, including nearly 2 million face masks and gowns and more than 10 million pairs of gloves, per the White House.

According to Johns Hopkins University, which manages an interactive map detailing the statistics of the outbreak, there are more than 164,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and more than 3,100 deaths nationwide.
