the other major holiday weekends such as Memorial Day, MLK Day, as well
as the Thanksgiving/Xmas holiday season, the Labor Day weekend is not a
big money making weekend at the box office. In fact, it’s the worst
holiday weekend season for films, since the total B.O. drops
dramatically. People are out doing other things instead of going to the
movies, and that was true this Labor Day weekend. So we’ll keep it short
and to the point.
being that the faith based film "War Room" did as some people predicted
and out-grossed "Straight Outta Compton," breaking that film’s three week streak at
being No.1 at the box office. "War Room," which expanded to more screens this weekend, grossed $9.3
million, compared to "Compton," which came in second with $8.8
million.
let’s not cry over "Compton." It’s already at $147 million domestically
(and who was it who commented that the film wouldn’t reach that amount
after I had said it would for sure), and the news from overseas is petty
good as well.
the film has opened in only 13 foreign territories to date, as of this
past Thursday, it has grossed $18.1 million so far. This weekend it
was No. 1 film in both the U.K. and Germany for the second weekend in a
row, and was No. 1 at the box office in Australia, New
Zealand and The Netherlands, which means that the film, as of today, is
well past $18 million, and perhaps somewhere in the $25-30 million range foreign gross, though final figures will come in later this week.
we are only talking about 13 territories to date, with openings in
Switzerland, Sweden and Korea this weekend and another 30 territories, including the rest of Europe, Asia, South America, Africa and the Middle
East, still to come. At this point, I think it’s very likely that the film
could hit the $100 million mark overseas. But I’ve underestimated it before, so who knows what it could really do overseas?
few other surprises were the small indie film, "A Walk in the Woods," released by new distributor Boradgreen, with Robert Redford and Nick
Nolte, which out-grossed "Transporter Refueled" with $10.4 million, compared
to "Transporter’s" $7 million.
the other nice surprise was the strong showing for the Mexican made,
raunchy animated film released by the Santa Monica based distributor
Pantelion, "Un Gallo con Muchos Huevoes" ("A Rooster with Many Eggs"), which
opened on only 385 screens, and grossed a very impressive $3.4 million, with the second highest per screen average for any film this week.
Even
more impressive when you consider that Pantelion released the film not
in an English dubbed version, but in its original Spanish language
soundtrack with English subtitles. The film, which is the highest
grossing Mexican film in Mexico this year, will be released in an
English dubbed version later, during its theatrical run.
The
film with the highest per screen average this weekend was Stanley
Nelson’s documentary "The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution," which made
an outstanding $20,000 in its theatrical opening at the Film Forum in
New York.
