A planned Fourth of July celebration Thursday turned bad for President Trump following concerns from citizens and elected officials that such a celebration should not be held considering the current state of issues with migrants at the southern border.

The tanks, fighter planes and fireworks were not enough to distract Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from what she called wasted funds in a tweet.

“Trump held these kids hostage to secure billions for their abusers,” she wrote. "Congress needs to see that."

Even after scheduling the event, President Trump could not escape the problems the day would cause after Capitol Police evacuated the west lawn due to lightning strikes near the National Mall, which kickstarted the first round of mocking via Twitter.

Sports journalist and noted Trump critic Jemele Hill connected the storm coming down on Trump and his supporters to a higher power.

"As the elders say, He may not come when you want Him to, but He’s always on time," Hill tweeted.

With all of those signs, however, Trump still pressed on to give his much-anticipated "Salute To America" speech. The President took the crowd through America's historical and cultural highlights, but in his own signature style, Trump sent social media ablaze when he got important details wrong.

In a portion of his speech, he suggested that during the Revolutionary War, the army "manned the air, it rammed the ramparts, it took over the airports, it did everything it had to do."

Those on Twitter were quick to point out that the Continental Army took on British forces in 1781, and air travel was not developed until over 100 years later.

Trump later claimed that all of the missed details during his speech were due to a faulty teleprompter.

"It kept going on. And then, at the end, it just went out," Trump told reporters at the White House on Friday. "It went kaput."

Placing the blame on the teleprompter led users back to a 2012 tweet from Trump where he criticized then President Barack Obama for his use of teleprompters.
