Since it was announced that a new trilogy of Star Wars films (Episode 7, 8, and 9) are in the works, there’ve been rumors suggesting that the next film in the series, Episode 7, could see the return of old favorites like Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Leia and, yes, even secondary characters like Lando Calrissian, played by the coolest man on the planet (well, he used to be right?) Billy Dee Williams.
Since the initial announcement last fall, it’s been reported that Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford have all signed up for Episode 7. But no word on any of the other characters, other than more rumors and speculation.
Until today, it didn’t appear that anyone had asked the man himself, Billy Dee Williams, whether he’ll be returning as well.
Thanks to the guys at Film Buff (via Comic Book Movie), it appears that Williams has been approached about returning, but whether or not he will is up in the air.
Here’s what Film Buff had to say:
Friend of the site Henry R. had a chance to talk to Williams briefly
at the Monster Mania convention in New Jersey this past weekend and
asked him just that. He reports – Billy Dee said, he has been asked, but
hasn’t decided if he is going to do it or not yet.
I wonder what’s keeping him from committing to it. I suppose he may not need the money nor the exposure at this point; He’ll be 76 years old in April, and has spent the last 20 years or so of his career doing TV work here and there.
But I do hope he considers doing it, if only for the heck of it, especially since the other key players are returning. It’ll be a fun reunion.
Disney CEO Bob Iger did say that, in addition to the 3 movies, there will also be spin-off films centered on other Star Wars characters, which will be released between the releases of the already announced 3 new Stars Wars movies (VII, VIII and IX), and that Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are already currently developing.
Iger wouldn’t say what characters will be spun-off into their own movies, so let the speculation begin. Maybe Lando will get his one flick? Jar Jar Binks maybe?
