Ever since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were confirmed as an item, Markle has been subjected to racially insensitive attacks ranging from offensive to downright vulgar.

The prince clapped back at British the tabloids for their involvement in the attacks shortly before the couple's official engagement, and since that rebuke, things have quieted down to some degree.

Now, in the whirlwind of swooning since the engagement announcement and the subsequent official photoshoot, it looks like there is some new drama afoot.

As we know, Markle's life is going to be fully entwined with the royal family's from here on out. This means participating in a lot of ceremonial engagements, such as the Queen's annual Christmas lunch, which Markle recently attended with Harry.

According to The Cut, Princess Michael — the wife of the Queen's cousin — wore a racist brooch to the lunch. The princess has worn the brooch, which is of a Blackamoor, several times before, but this time was taken to task for it given Markle's presence. Blackamoor is an term that was used mostly in Europe to describe black Muslims (also once called black Moors). Depictions of the black Muslims in subservient roles first became popular in European art in the 18th century.

More recent depictions of black Muslims done in this style, such as jewelry created by Dolce and Gabbana in 2012, have been criticized as being in bad taste at best, as an NYU article explains.

While it isn't clear whether or not the princess wore the brooch to deliberately insult the future princess, it is clear that this isn't the first time Princess Michael has been involved in some side-eye worthy behavior when it comes to race.

In 2004, she allegedly told a group of black diners in New York to "go back to the colonies" and later tried to prove she wasn't racist by telling the story of the time “I even pretended years ago to be an African, a half-caste African, but because of my light eyes I did not get away with it, but I dyed my hair black.”

The Cut reminds us that her father was a Nazi and a member of Hitler's SS, and that Princess Michael has also referred to African people as "adorable."

TMZ reports that after facing a tongue lashing from the public, a spokesperson for Princess Michael reached out to tell them that Michael is "very sorry and distressed" and has vowed to never wear the brooch again.

Neither Kensington or Buckingham Palace has released an official comment at this time.
