After returning home from Russia, Brittney Griner has a new look due to conditions behind bars in Russia

According to ESPN, Maria Blagovolina, Griner’s lawyer for the trial in Russia, said the basketball star had to cut her locs due to the low temperatures of the prison she stayed in.

Her hair started freezing due to the cold temperatures, which caused pain. Instead of feeling tortured all winter, she cut her hair off almost two weeks ago.

“It’s very cold in there and every time she washed her hair she got cold and would get a chill,” Blagovolina said. “She should have waited until New Year’s Day.”

Fans have witnessed Griner’s hair transformation over the years since it takes time to grow locs. Cutting her hair off was likely a tough decision.

The 32-year-old left Russia elated on Thursday to finally head home after being detained for several months.

According to TMZ, she told one person on the plane that she was “happy” and in good spirits.

U.S. official John Kirby said Friday that after Griner landed in San Antonio she seem to be in a healthy state.

The athlete will go through a medical examination first in Texas before returning to Phoenix, Arizona.
