It’s starting to look like we’re about to get paid! California and New York have passed legislation that will increase their state’s minimum wage to $15. This is a major win, however the legislation won’t take effect until 2022.
via USA Today:
California Gov. Jerry Brown’s legislation makes his state the first to commit to raising the minimum wage to $15 by the end of 2022. Under a deal reached with state lawmakers last week, the state minimum wage will rise to $10.50 on Jan. 1 for businesses with 26 or more employees. Annual hikes will result in a minimum of $15 per hour in January 2022.
Smaller businesses would have until the end of 2022 to comply.
New York lawmakers have determined that employers with at least 11 employees will increase wages to $11 by the end of 2016 then increase by $2 every year for the next two years. For small businesses they are mandated to pay $10.50 by the end of 2016 and then increase $1.50 each year for three years.
More states should take note and follow in the footsteps of California and New York. And if all else fails we can all channel our inner Lil Kim and throw shade at the polls if we don’t paid. Your vote, your voice.
