The boyfriend of an Alabama woman who went missing after calling 911 to report a toddler walking along a busy interstate said she was kidnapped and spent 48 hours “fighting for her life” before she returned home this past weekend.

According to WBRC, Carlethia “Carlee” Nichole Russell, 25, was reported safe on Saturday at 10:45 p.m. after showing up at her parent’s home, police said.

Hoover police and fire officials responded to the residence where Russell was found alive. She was transported to UAB Hospital for an evaluation and later released.

On Sunday, Russell’s boyfriend, Thomar Latrell Simmons, took to Facebook and claimed the nursing student was kidnapped and is now recovering after the horrific ordeal.

“She was literally fighting for her life for 48 hours, so until she’s physically & mentally stable again she is not able to give any updates or whereabouts on her kidnapper at this very moment,” Simmons wrote in the post.

The two-day search for Russell gained national attention when she was reported missing after seeing a toddler wandering along I-459 Thursday night. Her disappearance raises awareness about sex trafficking and how children are used as bait to lure women into secluded areas.

Russell’s parents shared similar sentiments Sunday about human trafficking and using a child to lure their daughter away from her car and kidnap her, per the New York Post.

Hoover Police Chief Nicholas Derzis said, “We work with facts” after the department initiated a probe into Russell’s disappearance.

“With social media, you got so many people that think they know what’s taken place. Right now, we’re just very pleased that she’s home,” he said, per WBRC.

Simmons said he worked nonstop until he was reunited with his girlfriend again.

“I have been going nonstop since I received the call that she was missing on Thursday night. I know she would’ve done the same for me, so I wasn’t going to give up until I saw her face again,” he wrote.

“I just want to thank all of my family, friends, former teammates, & church members who called or texted me just to let me know that they’re praying & here for me; you guys don’t know how much that meant to me,” he added.

Law enforcement confirmed Russell made the 911 call around 9:35 p.m. on Thursday and shared the same information with a family member. She then pulled over and stepped out of her car to check on the child.

The family member told police they could hear Russell screaming over the phone before losing contact with her. Her mother, Talitha Russell, shared details about the moments leading up to her daughter’s kidnapping.

“At some point, she got out of the car and my daughter-in-law could hear her asking the child if they were OK,” Talitha said. “The child did not respond, or at least she did not hear her respond. And then she heard our daughter Carlee scream and from there on all we could hear was noise…background noise in her phone which we later found out was noise from the interstate.”

Traffic footage obtained by WBRC showed the area where Russell had disappeared. Talitha said the 25-year-old’s wig was found near the car with her belongings inside. The engine was also running when police arrived at the scene.

“We wanted her to come home safe and sound – and we’ll hope that’s what happened here,” Derzis said, WBRC reported. “The investigation portion… we’ll get to, but to me the main deal is making sure that she got home safe with her family. And I couldn’t be more excited, and I hope the community feels the same way.”
