We gave a knowing laugh when T’Challa said “aw hell naw, Karen! Keep your bland-ass potato salad to yourself!” on Black Jeopardy a few weeks ago, but everyone (*cough Dwight Folks *cough*) wasn’t in on the joke.

The Black Panther star explained the hilarious Saturday Night Live skit during an interview with Variety.

“It’s funny by itself, but they don’t get that it’s an inside joke.” Boseman said. “In the African-American experience, potato salad is a thing that even within your family, within your church, within your family reunion. Any barbecue you go to, it’s like anybody can’t bring the potato salad.”

He explained what happens when an outsider dares to bring unvetted potato salad to the function.

“You have to earn the right to bring the potato salad," the Black Panther star said. "So, Karen bringing the potato salad is like, ‘Wait, she doesn’t even know what she’s getting into.’”

Hopefully, this explanation will save the Karens of the world from a heap of raisined embarrassment.
