Y’all heard about that Bill Maher kerfuffle on Friday, right? If you were chillin’ under that comfy rock, allow me to freshen you up.
During a live taping his show, Real Time with Bill Maher, Maher was interviewing Republican senator Ben Sasse.
Sasse offered the evening host an invite to Nebraska saying, “We’d love to have you work in the fields with us,” to which Maher retorted, “Work in the fields? Senator, I’m a house n*gger.”

Rightfully so, social media erupted into angry chaos, with several people calling for the HBO show’s cancellation.
Chicago's favorite son Chance the Rapper was one of the more notable voices, directing his tweet to HBO itself pleading, "Please @HBO Do Not Air Another Episode of Real Time With Bill Maher.”

Activist DeRay McKesson joined in on his own timeline tweeting, "But really, @BillMaher has got to go. There are no explanations to make this acceptable.”

But, Maher ain’t new to this game. He has always rested comfortably on his “offensive content for shock factor” schtick, most times under the guise of being bluntly progressive.
He has been wrapped up in the cloth of Islamophobia for years. For one, during an October 2014 interview with Ben Affleck Maher said that "[Islam] is the only religion that acts like the mafia that will f*cking kill you if you say the wrong thing, draw the wrong picture, or write the wrong book," as noted by the The Guardian.
Need another example? In 2015, he also jokingly hinted that former One Direction member Zayn Malik was part of the Boston bombing, as Billboard reminds us.
When it comes to whether anyone should be shocked at Maher’s comments, Iranian-American author and television host Reza Aslan put it best when he tweeted, "I can’t believe Bill Maher said something racist, said no Muslim ever."

Maher released an apologetic statement to the The New York Times: "Friday nights are always my worst night of sleep because I’m up reflecting on the things I should or shouldn’t have said on my live show. Last night was a particularly long night as I regret the word I used in the banter of a live moment. The word was offensive, and I regret saying it and am very sorry.”
Also per the Times, HBO released its own statement noting that Maher’s quip was “inexcusable and tasteless” and has vowed to remove the clip from future airings of the episode. HBO has not; however, made an official statement on whether they will fire Maher and/or pull Real Time off the air.
I suppose we shall see, and we’ll keep you posted on how this story develops.
