Model Coco Austin took to Instagram this past weekend to reflect on her 20-year modeling career. But the post listing her achievements and recalling how hard it was for her as a white curvy woman to break through the modeling industry rubbed some people the wrong way.
In the long and racy post, Austin wrote about how modeling was exclusive to only skinny women. She mentioned that today celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj and others are embraced for their voluptuous figures. Coco alludes to them having plastic surgery. And fans weren't quite sure how to take that.
"I mention them because young people see pop culture as the history makers but they need to know it started somewhere before them, this was also back before the plastic surgery craze," she wrote. "During my time it was pretty much Jlo that was making waves with the derriere phenomenon and Cindy Margolos was a popular bikini model and Buffie the Body was a popular urban model and of course I need to give props to Anna Nicole Smith for also seeing this vision"
When she started modeling girls with "booty" were considered fat in the modeling world and that she was one of the pioneers to change that. Critics did not see it that way. Many believed that 38-old-model has stolen the spotlight away from other black models working during her heyday.
All you did was alter your body to imitate the black women who’ve been doing it. Let me guess, you originated cornrows and twerking too? Whatever.

Last year, Coco was called out for cultural appropriation when she sported cornrows. Despite the backlash, she insisted that she meant no harm.
Other users believed Coco gave herself a little too much credit for being an innovator in urban modeling.
Delusions of grandeur

Some of her fans had to let Coco know that even though they love her, the comment about plastic surgery seemed judgmental because of her alleged procedures.
Instagram user @sequins4tha90 wrote: Paved the way? Made thick curves acceptable…real shape? DELUSIONAL…when you forgot that the original photos exist, people from WAY back are still around and a&& shots/plastic surgery/fat injections and liposuction are more than evident. Nothing on you is real, nothing at all.
Which then led Instagram user @kk_ismyfavkid to follow up with this statement: I have to agree with u !! I love coco but her comment blasting Kim k and Nikki? Their names in the sentence with butt jobs and plastic surgery when we all seen back n the day pics !!! Shame on her!!!
After receiving much backlash, Coco updated her status leaving this message for the naysayers.
Update to post!!! This was posted Sunday 1/14 & ALL comments were positive until race was brought up today.Let me remind you 20 years ago there were not a lot of white girls w/ thick bodies in the modeling game. They didn't consider my body type as the standard therefore It was harder to work in the industry.I was one of the 1st white models to break the mold & go mainstream with my body type and to let people know its OK to be curvy in the modeling world.Today curvy is the norm but when I first started out it wasn't. Yesterday I felt I explained this thoroughly but I see some of you needed more details.
Although Coco doesn't confirm or deny enhancing her body, it seems like she's sticking by her original statement. What do you think? Was Coco a pioneer or is she just another culture vulture? Share your thoughts below.
