The world was inspired when homeless vet Johnny Bobbitt Jr. allegedly gave his last $20 to help stranded motorist Kate McClure when her car ran out of gas. When news surfaced that McClure and her boyfriend, Mark D’Amico, supposedly ran off with money from a GoFundMe campaign for Bobbitt, outrage ensued.

Now, all three of them may end up in prison.

The trio is facing charges for making up the story to earn money, according to legal documents obtained by NBC10. They will be charged with conspiracy and theft by deception.

D’Amico and McClure turned themselves in on Wednesday. It is unclear whether Bobbitt is in custody.

The drama began last year when D’Amico and McClure created the account after telling the world the seemingly fabricated story. They earned over $400,000 in donations. D’Amico and McClure also bought a camper for Bobbitt and placed it near their New Jersey home. The seemingly sweet story went sour after Bobbitt sued the couple in August for using the fund as a "personal piggy bank." He also accused them of selling the camper and pocketing the profit.

D’Amico and McClure denied the accusations and claimed Bobbitt wasted $25,000 on drugs, legal debt and loans to his family. D’Amico later admitted to spending $500 at SugarHouse Casino but claims he paid it back with his earnings, according to The Inquirer.  The couple’s lawyer claimed Bobbitt got $200,000, but Bobbitt’s lawyer said he only received $75,000.

D’Amico and McClure were later ordered to give the rest of the money to Bobbitt’s attorneys.

In September, police raided their home and seized several items including their brand-new BMW.

A press conference about the case is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
