Actors Courtney B. Vance and Tosin Cole were making their rounds to promote the new series 61st Street, which deals with the racism and bias that torments the Black community. The television drama, co-executive produced by Michael B. Jordan, will showcase police brutality, corruption, the injustices that occur in the criminal justice system, Black unity and how Black women serve as the pillars of the community, according to Hello Beautiful.
During their interview, the pair stressed the importance of returning the support that Black women provide.
“It’s very important. You know I’m Black. … Raised by a Black mother, Black aunties, Black sisters, Black cousins, so it’s very important. Where would I be without the Black women in my life? Black women have always been there for me,” Cole, who portrays Moses Johnson, said to the online beauty platform.
Vance chimed in, adding, “We are a team. I’m supporting them and they’re supporting me. They wouldn’t be able to do all that they do, if we didn’t cover them. My job is to ask my wife; what do I do … is there anything I need to do.”
The unconditional support from Vance is expected, as he married Hollywood royalty Angela Bassett in 1997. Both have thriving careers and share a strong foundation that surely prompts him to sustain his love for Black women.
61st Street was filmed in Chicago and focuses on the story of a high school student-athlete with a bright future who is erroneously entangled in the criminal justice system. In the movie, an officer pursues a suspect after a drug dealer is killed. The officer is later found dead.
Cole’s character is arrested on suspicion of being connected with the death, and Chicago public defender Franklin Roberts, who is played by Vance, defends Moses, The Quintessential Gentleman reports.
The new series premiered on AMC on April 10.
