Not too many of us would be able to keep a calm head in the face of chaos. Earlier this week, there was a reported shooting in Alexandria, VA at the baseball practice of Republican Congressmen. Crystal Griner and David Bailey, two capitol police officers sprung into action to subdue the rifleman.
While many people fled the scene and took cover at the facilities dug out, understandably, Bailey and Griner engaged in all out shoot out in hopes of distracting the gun man James Hodgkinson, who had already injured Congressman Steve Scalise to the extent that he was dragging himself from the direction of the bullets in hopes of escape.
Both Bailey and Griner sustained injuries and are expected to make rapid recoveries. Scalise is still listed in critical condition.
In a current climate where we are seemingly bombarded with police work that makes us question protocol and public safety, these two are obviously at the top of their game.
David Bailey is a 9 year veteran of the force, alumni of North Carolina Central University, and member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. Crystal Griner is a former basketball standout from Hood College. According to Heavy.com, she sustained a bullet wound to her ankle and was sent flowers, her and her wife, from Donald Trump himself.
Yes. About that.
Griner and Bailey are both on the security detail of Scalise, a man who has enthusiastically spent his career attempting to marginalize gay folk and likened himself to "David Duke without the baggage." Isn't it ironic that he was saved by two black people, one of whom, is a lesbian.
Shoutout to these fine examples of servicemen and women. Once again showing us that black excellence, as with patriotism, is duty executed regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation – and if the person you're protecting likes you or not.
