After celebrating his achievement of receiving college acceptance offers from over 185 institutions totaling more than $10 million in scholarships, Dennis “Maliq” Barnes, has chosen to enroll at Cornell University. The New Orleans high school senior made history as the only high school senior in U.S. history to receive that financial amount in scholarships,

“Cornell Engineering congratulates Dennis and his fellow members of the Class of 2027, along with their families, on all they have accomplished to reach this exciting moment in their educational journeys,” the school statement reads, CNN reported. “We are excited to welcome this incredible group of future leaders to our campus community in just a few months.”

The exceptional student is graduating high school two years early with a 4.98 GPA. His college goals have expanded into working in computer science and, later, enrolling in law school.

“I have committed to attend Cornell University and intend to pursue computer science and to later move on to practice software development,” Barnes said. “Today is an exciting day for me and my family, and I look forward to working with Cornell’s College of Engineering over the course of my undergraduate education.”

Barnes told CNN that since a young child, he always knew what career he wanted and selected Cornell University as his college choice because the university is the “best Ivy League for engineering.”

He explained his choice was also based on the fact that he wanted to attend a school that would “set me up for success, that would give me a quality education.”

When asked what practices he would like his peers to follow to reach his level of success, Barnes’ response was direct and spiritual, as he expressed that God is the reason for his blessings.

“Keep God first, not everybody is religious, but one thing that I would definitely encourage is to keep God in the midst. I know that’s something that has always worked for me,” he said.

Barnes blurted out that the Obamas would be the perfect candidates to advise him on life and education when asked who he would love to receive advice from as he embarks on his college journey.
