The Personal Site

Next up is taking advantage of the free advertising social media gives you. From Facebook to Twitter to Instagram to Vine and even YouTube, they all give you a field to enter in a url. For the life of me, I don’t know why people waste this by putting in nick names or other silly things. While funny, they are also missing a chance for people to learn more about them.

How many of you have a business website or personal website? For those that don’t I highly suggest you get one. Having a consistent online profile is key when crafting your story. You want everything to line up from what you are known for to what you do to what you will do. There is no better place than your own site to tell that story.

Companies such as WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, Tumblr and many more make it easy for you to create your own site in a matter of minutes. If you are like me and want more control over your site then buy a hosting package, a domain name and a template or two, or code it if you know how to, just make it happen.

There are tons of YouTube tutorials online to help you create your site. If you are a beginner, here’s one that I found that looks pretty good.

I can’t tell you how many times I have approached someone via email and because I have literally a website with all of my writing, videos, and other material for people to check out they wanted to write an article on me, do business with me or book me to speak. Information is the new knowledge and the more ways you show you know what you’re doing but more importantly you know your stuff the more people want to follow you, learn from you, work with you and help you out anyway they can!

The Virtual Resume

VirtualResume

Some of you are thinking well if I don’t like writing or I’m not very good at drawing, taking photos or editing videos, I don’t have anything to put on my website. Well, there’s an option for you as well. It’s called a virtual resume.

It’s honestly simpler than you think. Head over to Google and search WordPress Virtual Resume templates or you can check out Theme Forest. This is the same site that I use to create my websites.

Here’s an example of mine.

The great thing about a virtual resume is the first impression you set. Even for jobs that I’ve applied to with tech companies and didn’t get the position, I always got a call back or a next interview just because they were impressed by this virtual resume. It shows I’m willing to go the extra mile to stand out. I’m innovative and think outside the box and if I did this to land an interview imagine what I can do for their company or for my own company. Never fear that being too creative can harm you. The world is shifting away from the industrial age and into the information age where creatives are running and leading some of the top companies in the world.

So  far, we’ve covered the bio, the profile pic, your personal  website and the virtual resume.  Now let’s bring it all together, and I’ll show you how to get connected with the movers and shakers in the game.
