Since Donald Trump was elected president in 2016, CNN host Don Lemon has remained committed to fact-checking the commander-in-chief's many false claims.
Earlier in December, the Louisiana native chastised Trump for hiring an undocumented immigrant to work at his New Jersey country club.
Now, Lemon is calling Trump out on a statement he made criticizing his predecessor Barack Obama in 2013.
On his primetime show Thursday, Lemon shared footage of Trump making a false claim that a majority of furloughed government employees were Democrats, to which Lemon called the remarks "really outrageous."
"The crassness of that statement is just stunning," Lemon scoffed.
In the same video, the award-winning anchor shared footage of a phone interview Trump did with Fox News in 2013 where he asserted former President Obama should be terminated for his mistreatment of the government shutdown.
"If you say, 'Who gets fired?' it always has to be the top," Trump declared.
Trump then implied Obama should accept responsibility for causing the shutdown and should lead his team to reach an agreeable solution.
"The problems start from the top, and they have to get solved from the top. The president is the leader; he has to get everyone in a room and lead," Trump said.
Much of the cause for the 2018 government shutdown stems from Congress failing to reach an agreement over who would fund the president's $5 billion wall across the United States-Mexico border, according to The Hill.
Before closing his segment, Lemon reiterated Trump's 2013 comments, expressing irony in his tone.
"Donald Trump suggesting that President Barack Obama should have been fired for a government shutdown. Priceless."
As the shutdown enters a week, Trump has made no plans to compromise with Democratic lawmakers. Bloomberg writes that on Friday, Trump reignited threats to "close the Southern Border entirely if the Obstructionist Democrats do not give us the money to finish the Wall."
We will be forced to close the Southern Border entirely if the Obstructionist Democrats do not give us the money to finish the Wall & also change the ridiculous immigration laws that our Country is saddled with. Hard to believe there was a Congress & President who would approve!
