The weekend is finally here, and instead of going out, you decide to binge one of your streaming apps and order some food. You’re not in the mood to experiment this time around, so you start scrolling and searching for a meal you know you’ll enjoy. Wings? Barbecue? That Black-owned Jamaican spot you can’t remember the name of?
If you’re using the DoorDash app, the restaurant won’t be hard to find because the on-demand delivery platform launched a feature to help customers locate Black-owned eateries in their area.
Just type “Black-owned” in the search bar on the food delivery app, and a list of restaurants tagged with that label will pop right up for you. The in-app feature is one of several ways
DoorDash is highlighting Black business owners. Other initiatives include the DoorDash Accelerator for Local Goods and loan matching in partnership with Kiva.
DoorDash Accelerator for Local Goods
In early 2022, the company launched the DoorDash Accelerator for Local Goods to help entrepreneurs who are people of color, women, transgender or immigrants and located in Chicago, New York City or Greater Washington, D.C. The accelerator is a self-paced, six-week course that educates participants on business management and development. Business owners also received $5,000 grants, marketing assistance and access to sell on DashMart.
Loan Support With 0% Interest
Sometimes a jumpstart is all you need to get the momentum to move forward, but Black business owners’ access to capital has significantly decreased in the past 15 years. That’s why DoorDash is pledging to match up to $15,000 in interest-free loans provided by Kiva, a nonprofit working to get more funds in underserved areas across the globe. After getting approved for the loan, business owners have to demonstrate their creditworthiness by asking friends, family and other people to lend to the cause, fundraising on the Kiva platform and agreeing to pay back the loan in three years.
DoorDash is empowering local economies by investing in things most of us can get behind — building strong communities and supporting small business owners. Learn about more ways to support Black-owned restaurants in your community.
