E. Roger Mitchell has been cast as troublemaker Chaff in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Lionsgate announced today.
Who's Chaff?
From the Hunger Games wiki (Spoilers for those who would rather not know it all now):
Chaff was six feet tall, with dark skin, and an arm that ends with a stump because he lost his hand in the 45th Hunger Games. He chose not to get a prosthetic arm. He and Haymtich were friends, as they both turned to drinking after they won their games. During the reaping recaps, Effie Trinket commented that "Chaff never could stay out of a fight," implying that he had volunteered as tribute. Chaff would have been in his mid to late forties when he died. Specifically, in Catching Fire, Chaff was not seen much during the Games, and was probably hiding to stay alive and searching for Katniss as it was his mission to protect and rescue her so she could help the rebels defeat the Capitol. Unfortunately he could not locate neither her nor Peeta until the end of the 75th Games. While trying to protect Peeta, he was killed by Brutus, just as Katniss was rescued by the rebels. Shortly after, Peeta avenged Chaff's death by killing Brutus.
The 41-year old Mitchell has been active on screen since te late 1990s; most recently, he had roles in indie filmmaker Alfred Robbins The Next Day (a film we've profiled on S&A), The Crazies, Battle Los Angeles, and more. Coming up, you'll see him with Denzel Washington in Flight, this fall.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will be released on November 22, 2013 – another year+ to go.
