For the first episode of Shadow and Act’s brand-new series Shadow and Act Live, Dominique Fishback talked to our Trey Mangum about her role in Netflix’s latest film Project Power. Fishback, who plays Robin, a New Orleans who must be saved by Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s characters Art and Frank from a drug that gives people superheroic powers for 5 minutes.
Fishback said she was surprised by her role in the film, especially since it fulfills a childhood dream.
“I couldn’t imagine that Robin’s role would be as wonderful as it is and also, when I first read it, I’m a huge fan of Man on Fire with Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning and Natalie Portman in The Professional. As I was growing up, I was like, ‘I want to do that,’…but never saw a Black girl filling that spot. You don’t see men doing anything to protect [a] young Black girl.”
She talked about how great Foxx and Gordon-Levitt were to her on set, including providing her and their families a New Orleans Halloween event of a lifetime, including a zoo excursion, trips to haunted houses and swamps, and a dance contest. “It was really like one of the Halloweens out of Disney, like Hocus Pocus,” she said.
While on set, Foxx and Gordon-Levitt always supported her. “[Foxx] always bigged me up. It was easy to feel like I was more than enough and that I had what it took,” she said. “…Joe was the same way.”
In a recent interview, Foxx spoke highly of Fishback’s talent, comparing her to the likes of a future Regina King or Regina Hall. Fishback said the compliments, which were hard for her to take at first, were “dope.”
“I feel honored and I think so highly so him,” she said. “I used to always watch him as a kid. My mom was always watching The Jamie Foxx Show.”
She also added that in one of her childhood journals, she wrote how she wanted to be like Foxx because of how he gives back to his family.
“When I got back to set, I definitely told him,” she said.
