Filmmaker and writer dream hampton often uses her platform to shed light on issues plaguing the Black community. One example of this is Surviving R. Kelly, the six-part miniseries chronicling the sexual abuse allegations against R&B singer R. Kelly that she executive produced for Lifetime.
In the same vein of shining light, in 2015, hampton produced and directed Treasure: From Tragedy to Trans Justice, Mapping a Detroit Story, a film chronicling the life of Shelly Hilliard, a Detroit transgender woman who was coerced into being a police informant and was subsequently murdered as a result.
Now, word has come that Hillard’s family has been awarded a $1.07 million settlement.

According to the Associated Press, Oakland County agreed to pay Shelley Hillard’s family to settle the lawsuit.
When Hillard was 19, she agreed to help police after she was caught with marijuana at a motel back in 2011. However, Hillard was subsequently murdered and dismembered after Chad Wolowiec, a police officer in the Detroit suburb of Madison Heights, exposed her as an informant in a drug bust.
