What if I told you that Laurence Fishburne will not appear in the fourth Matrix film?

The actor who captured audiences’ imaginations as Morpheus said he hasn’t been asked to return to Lana Wachowski’s upcoming Matrix film, expected to start filming April 1, 2022 according to IMDB.

“I have not been invited,” he told New York Magazine, as reported by Yahoo! Entertainment. “Maybe that will make me write another play. I wish them well. I hope it’s great.”

Not much has been released about the film so far, but many Matrix fans are going to be disappointed not to see Morpheus teaching mind-bending skills to The One in this upcoming film. A younger version of Morpheus is largely rumored to be played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in the upcoming film.

“It is probably the role that I’ll be best remembered for, which is great,” he said, equating Morpheus to legendary roles like Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi from Star Wars. He also equated the character’s popularity and pop culture influence to Muhammad Ali and Bruce Lee’s influences on fans.

As Fishburne said in the interview, Morpheus is thankfully not the only role Fishburne is known for. Fans can still see him on episodes of black-ish, which is going into its seventh season next year.
