Mass shootings have become such a common occurrence that they rarely even get a mention anymore unless some extraordinary circumstances are involved, such as the recent shooting in Orlando. In fact, just last year alone, if one uses the official definition of a mass shooting as an incident in which at least four people are killed or wounded, there were 372 mass shootings, killing 475 and wounding 1,870 in just the U.S. alone, in 2015.

Staggering and depressing numbers when you think about it; but if one takes that definition, then the recent spate of mass shootings started almost exactly 50 years ago, on Aug. 1, 1966, when ex-Marine sniper Charles Whitman killed his wife and mother, then climbed a 27-story tower at the University of Texas in Austin and gunned down 49 people, killing 14 more before police shot him to death.

The incident shocked the world and was seen at the time as a once-in-a-lifetime event and even a controversial TV movie, “The Deadly Tower” was broadcast in 1975 on NBC, with Kurt Russell playing Whitman. But as the public eventually learned, the Whitman case was just the beginning.

Now, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the tragic event that literally changed America, the “Today’s Show” Tamron Hall will host a new special for the Investigation Discovery cable channel titled “Guns on Campus” airing on Sunday August 7 10PM Eastern time.

During the show Hall will interview the first responders and witnesses of the Texas Tower shooting as well as university professors and students who have different views and opinions about guns on college campuses.

Among those Hall will talk to are Virginia Tech survivor and anti-gun violence advocate Colin Goddard, and University of Nevada rape survivor, Amanda Collins, who is an advocate for campus gun carry.
