Black cinema is in the midst of a revival -- we are finally seeing movies with black writers and directors creating stories that reflect the black experience. The latest of such films is Jordan Peele's Get Out. The film received 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes -- a rare occurrence --  and topped the box office with $30.5 million in ticket sales according to the LA Times. Get Out was actually one of the previews I noticed when I went to see Moonlight. It really caught my attention when I watched the premise unfold: Chris, played by Daniel Kaluuya, is going to meet his white girlfriend Rose's parents for the first time. As you can imagine, Chris was apprehensive, seeing that it was going to be his first chance at an impression. Another layer of anxiety is added to this already tense situation when Chris learns that Rose has not revealed to her parents that he is black. Again, these are all pretty common scenarios any of us would go through. Upon arriving at the house, Chris almost instantly senses that something isn't quite right with this white family. He quickly learns that his suspicions are more than accurate.Truth be told, I have never been one for scary movies, especially the realistic ones. I never realized how underrepresented black people are in horror films. Well, I knew, but I didn't understand the social implications or how it affects the way white America sees black men. What makes Get Out special is that it shits on the trope of the random black dude in the scary movie. As writer Frederick McKindra put it in his well-written Buzzfeed piece: "Get Out and the Purge franchise finally makes black men the protagonists of horror films and center their real-life terror of living in suburban America." He goes on to say that for the first time we get to see a fully developed black character be scared, instead of scary. That floored me. I never realized how much black men are viewed as violent in real life. A fully developed black character is rarely afforded the opportunity to die in a way that matters. The black character typically has such an arbitrary role, that when they are randomly killed off, it never means much. Much like how black skin has been weaponized in real life -- black victims are rarely ever seen as victims. Director Jordan Peele said he wanted to make it so movie viewers would need to see it twice. Whether he did that as a matter of artistic merit or just to lure people into purchasing a second ticket doesn't matter, cause it worked. After seeing the movie, my friends and I sat a restaurant for literal hours dissecting the highlighting and making mention of the things we noticed that we couldn't discuss in the theater. I really have to go back to see the movie for a second time because I just know there's something I missed. In the meantime, here are three things I peeped during and after viewing once. There are spoilers. If you have not seen the movie, stop right here, and come back later.1)  After Rose and Chris hit the deer -- that seemed to come out of nowhere -- Chris is compelled to go find it. We later find out he does this because Chris feels that he abandoned his mother when she was struck by a car. He feels guilty of death because he thinks he could've somehow come to her rescue. This is also why he went back to save Georgina after accidentally hitting her with his car.2) Dean reveals very early the source of the family's hatred towards black men during the tour of the house. It stems from his father losing to Jesse Owens in the 1936 Olympics, which was held in Nazi, Germany. Jesse Owens's victory was a clear challenge to Hitler's belief that German "Aryan" people were the superior race. Dean's father clearly felt overshadowed by this physical and political victory, spawning an extreme sense of jealousy and hatred for the black man's physical ability. We later see in the video Chris is forced to watch that Dean's father was the mastermind behind the whole transformation process.3) The trigger for Chris' hypnosis was the tapping teaspoon on the tea cup -- a very subtle means to a horrific end. Often times acts of racism are very subtle. There is a feeling of paranoia when you notice it, and even more so if you call them out. However, you know what it is when you see it. This is why the lead actor Daniel Kaluuya likens racism to being in a real life horror film in his interview with Vulture. There is an assumed paranoia associated with accusations of racism. The same paranoia that the lead characters in most horror films experience when they try to explain some supernatural occurrence.4) The sunken place in the film is similar to the paralyzing effects of hearing racial slurs in the workplace. The hypnosis is a satirical/extreme example of the psychology associated with enduring racism of all kinds. You are aware that it is happening but the need to keep your job or not go to jail, prevents you from being able to react. The mind of the actual black person was trapped in the sunken place, and while they were aware, they were unable to react.5) The first song we hear at the beginning of the movie is Childish Gambino's Redbone. Director Jordan Peele was very intentional in choosing this song for the intro to the movie. "Well, first of all, I love the ‘Stay Woke’ [lyric] — that’s what this movie is about. I wanted to make sure that this movie satisfied the black horror movie audience’s need for characters to be smart and do things that intelligent, observant people would do," Peele told...

The long-awaited season premiere of FX's hit show Atlanta aired last night. If you missed it, Katt Williams had a show-stealing performance as Earn's crazy uncle who has a pet alligator and deemed the "Alligator Man" by the neighborhood kids. In an interview with Complex, Williams explains that he prepped for this role by interning at an alligator farm. "The first two times I auditioned, I wasn't good enough and other people were better. I just kept at it, and then I interned at an alligator farm for three-and-a-half weeks, just so I could get comfortable enough that we didn't use a stuntman. I really adopted the alligator into my home. And became so comfortable with it that it was like working with another co-star," Williams explains. Williams kicked it with an alligator for three weeks to prepare for this part. Let that sink in.A little context for those who have yet to see the episode entitled "Alligator Man," here's a quick recap. The episode's primary focus is on Earn and Darius’ journey to Willie (Earn and Paper Boi’s uncle) aka Alligator Man’s house — where he’s accused of kidnapping his girl for stealing $50 from his wallet. One of the neighbors calls the cops saying that Willie kidnapped his love interest, and moments after Earn arrives, the cops also show up.As soon as the cops arrive, they demand Willie step out and surrender to them. He refuses as he knows the matter simply got out of hand quickly. Earn walks out of the house telling the police that he couldn’t get his uncle out of the lovely abode. Glover shows remorse to law enforcement and joins the crowd outside. Coming out of the front door, making the grandest appearance of the entire 30-minute episode, the alligator creeps out and walks to the front of the house where he stays posted comfortably. The cops were in shock, and Willie sneaks out and runs down the street, escaping authorities.Williams' character is a part of the outstanding joke of "Florida Man." “Florida Man is responsible for large number of abnormal incidents that occur in Florida,” Darius tells Earn. “Think of him as an alt-right Johnny Appleseed. No one knows his true identity, date of birth, what he looks like — that’s why headlines always say ‘Florida Man.'”Where this is going is unknown. However, when asked if we would see more of his character, Williams said, "I don't know what any of the subsequent episode numbers are. I certainly haven't seen the last of it."Atlanta airs on FX Thursdays at...

Before actor Donald Glover became a household name, he was just a talented kid of a post office worker and a daycare provider in Stone Mountain, Georgia, just east of Atlanta. The rapper, TV showrunner, actor, and comedian has become one of the most important black men in Hollywood due to his multi-hyphenate talent and his ability to create his own path. A recent New Yorker profile on Glover has revealed that even with his immense talent, he had to overcome the stereotypes of being the "black guy" in Hollywood. Conceived in 2013, Glover's popular TV show Atlanta has become the blackest show on TV because it portrays black people in a natural and unfiltered way that other shows have failed to do previously. The network originally did not want Glover to use "nigga" in the show's pilot, advising that he should avoid it all together.  “No black people talk to each other like that, or need to. It’s all for white people,” FX advised. According to the New Yorker, the network’s compromise position was that only a white character who says “Really, nigga?” and “You know how niggas out here are” could be used. Glover recalled his frustration with the network by this decision.“I’m black, making a very black show, and they’re telling me I can’t use the N-word," he exclaimed. "Only in a world run by white people would that happen.”But he realized that American society does not want genuine blackness. White supremacy makes blackness appear differently than it should. He said that blackness is always being viewed through whiteness. “If ‘Atlanta’ was made just for black people, it would be a very different show. But I can’t even begin to tell you how, because blackness is always seen through a lens of whiteness — the lens of what white people can profit from at that moment," Glover told the interviewer. "That hasn’t changed through slavery and Jim Crow and civil-rights marches and housing laws and ‘We’ll shoot you.’ Whiteness is equally liquid, but you get to decide your narrative.”I found this shade (but truth) to be interesting. We need to talk about Princess Shuri.'Black Panther' is not only a movie; it's an experience. Not only did it amass more than $200 million dollars during its opening weekend -- proving that black people are powerful beyond measure -- it also showcased characters with depth.But, as powerful as 'Black Panther' was for the adults, the potential impact it can have on black boys and girls who watch it is immeasurable. And though there are many, one character sticks out as a shining example of black girl power for young black girls, Shuri.Twenty-four-year-old actress Letitia Wright played Shuri, the spunky younger sister of King T'Challa, portrayed by Chadwick Boseman. She's hilarious, smart and full of wit. As important as King T’Challa (the Black Panther himself) was, he was only as good as the tools she created herself.When we look at ‌Shuri, we can only ask ourselves how many more Shuris exist who have untapped potential that can be used in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields where women of color are underrepresented. Over the years, we have seen the reports that describe the ignored potential of women in STEM fields like engineering, such as Ignored Potential: A Collaborative Road Map for Increasing African American Women in Engineering from the National Society of Black Engineers. This report, like so many others, provides us with a snapshot of what STEM has looked like for women of color in the last decade. In 2015, less than one percent of all U.S. engineering bachelor degrees were given to black women, and minority women compromise fewer than one of 10 employed scientists and engineers.With STEM jobs expected to increase by 2020, more African-American women are needed. To see a young black woman on the screen like Shuri engineering tools and using technology as a weapon of choice is important and can be inspiring. For some little girls, it might even be life-changing.After seeing Shuri, some young lady may take a second look at how she views and uses technology. As much as we needed 'Black Panther' as a movie, we needed Shuri as a representative to help show young girls the possibilities.Organizations like Black Girls Code have made it their mission to support young girls like Shuri and break down the barriers and preconceived notions that suggest STEM‌ isn't for girls of color. Black girls can and should code, too. Our job is to support them ‌like we supported the movie. Since leaving the White House after serving as an aide to President Donald Trump, Omarosa Manigault-Newman has been spilling the tea about the inner workings of the Trump administration.In a recent clip from CBS' Celebrity Big Brother, Manigault-Newman said that if Trump is forced to resign and Vice President Mike Pence becomes president, the public will be calling for the days of Trump. “Everyone wishing for impeachment might want to reconsider,” she said among her castmates, adding that they would be “begging for days of Trump if Pence became president.”During her time in the White House, she served as the Director of Communications for the Office of Public Liaison. His free-flowing hairstyle and catchphrases were as much a part of his image as the electromagnetic superpowers he possessed. At a young age, he had to overcome tremendous obstacles and incidents of tragedy, bullying and even racism, all while trying to defend the city that created him.His television series and its contribution to the world of black superheroes is occasionally overlooked in comic circles, but it can be argued that he may have helped paved the way for films like Black Panther and television shows like Luke Cage and Black Lightning to exist today. His name was Virgil Hawkins, but we know him better as Static Shock. From 2000-2004, Static captured the attention of young superhero lovers each Saturday morning on the “Kids’ WB!” Network, and his crime-fighting escapades gave them one memorable moment after another, from teaming up with Lil’ Romeo to defeat a power-snatching villain named Leach to meeting a legendary African folklore hero, Anansi the Spider, to unforgettable partnerships with the likes of Batman and Superman. But the series also provided us a healthy balance between Static the superhero and Virgil Hawkins the young man. Whereas Static was grappling with the daily perils of defending a city from the notorious “Bang Babies,” Hawkins had to grapple with losing his mom to gang violence and subsequently avoiding the gang culture himself, an incident of blatant racism from the father of his best friend, and occasional instances of bullying, things many young kids and teenagers unfortunately.  “Here’s a kid who is smart, who is trying to do the right thing, dealing with relatable problems whether it was family or school or friendships,” actor Phil LaMarr, the voice of Static, said in a 2017 interview with Warner Archives and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. “Despite that fact that it was a cartoon that revolved around superheroes, it felt real to me.”For black Americans born from 1995-96, it’s impossible to fully appreciate Blade or Meteor Man, because they were too young; Static Shock was their first black superhero. Static was their first sense of representation on television of positive images of young black boys (and girls). He provided life lessons about the importance of family and friendship, as well as what it means to be proud of who you are and where you come from, regardless of what people say or think about you.  “That was a great part of Static Shock; It wasn’t about that Static was black, but he was black,” said LaMarr. “His life, his world – those were real. And that kind of normalization is what’s key to true diversity.”Black History Month is a month dedicated to honoring those that came before us and paved the way for our success. Anissa Pierce. Anissa Pierce. Swoon. My eyes were not prepared for the beautiful scene that I was treated to on this past Tuesday’s episode of Black Lightning. As a black viewer, Black Lightning has delighted me in so many ways through its realistic portrayal of the titular superhero of Black Lightning, aka Jefferson Pierce, (Cress Williams), coming out of retirement to protect himself, his family and his community of Freeland from gangs, crime, corruption and police brutality. However, as a black lesbian viewer, nothing delighted me more than seeing Jefferson Pierce’s oldest daughter, Anissa (Nafessa Williams), kissing and cuddling in bed with an unnamed black woman.During the three-minute scene, Anissa and the unnamed woman — whose name I later learned was Chenoa — laughed, flirted and discussed their relationship, or more likely, their situationship, of approximately one year.  While watching the scene, I couldn’t help but smile. This smile was one of happiness, as much as it was one of sadness. I felt this way because I can’t recall the last time that I remember seeing two queer black women express physical and emotional affection for each other on primetime television. As a black lesbian viewer in her late twenties, I can count on one hand the number of times that I have seen two black female fictional television characters in a relationship. To my knowledge, primetime television has only depicted black women in relationships in one-episode arcs. Most recently, in a season one episode of Black-ish entitled, “Please Don’t Ask, Please Don’t Tell,” Raven Symoné’s character, Rhonda, comes out to her mother Ruby (Jennifer Lewis). An episode of Dark Angel features Original Cindy (Valerie Rae Miller) in bed with her ex-girlfriend, before her girlfriend is murdered.While I’m thankful for Black Lightning’s recent contribution to the representation of black lesbians, most of the time when black women are depicted in relationships with other women, they’re not with black women. Popular television dramas like The Fosters, Rosewood, Black Mirror and How to Get Away with Murder all depict black queer female characters with white female partners. Pretty Little Liars and The Bold Type fair a bit better with diversity, depicting their queer black female characters with non-black women of color. While it is not a negative thing for the media to depict non-heterosexual black women in relationships with non-black partners, solely depicting them as dating non-black women implicitly sends the message to young, queer black women, and girls, that romantic love between black women is impossible.This message is even more troubling considering that black lesbians seem to be one of the most forgotten and underrepresented groups in the media. Compared to black gay, bisexual and queer men, black lesbians have relatively fewer fictionalized stories about our lives, loves and triumphs. Even recently, with films like Moonlight and the news that Issa Rae will be creating a new HBO series called Him or Her, focusing on a black bisexual man’s dating life, it appears that black heterosexual and black gay media’s recent ruminations on toxic masculinity leave little else in the way of public discussion of other queer identities, that aren’t cisgender queer men. I love and respect my black gay, bisexual and queer male counterparts, and I hope that this uptick in depicting non-heterosexual black men in the media doesn’t ultimately leave black gay, bisexual and queer men without the substantive representation that they desperately need in the long-term. I also hope that this increasingly frequent discussion of queer black sexuality can exist in an inclusive manner, without erasing queer black women. Given that two out of the three founders of Black Lives Matter are queer black women, media representation of black queer women in happy, healthy relationships, especially with other black women, is long overdue.When I see Anissa, I see myself. She’s a 22-year-old medical student and community activist. In the first episode alone, she is arrested for protesting. She also records the police wrongfully restraining her father, Jefferson, because he fit the description of a robbery suspect. Like her, I’m in graduate school and I’m politically active. I have always defended my rights, and the rights of other groups of marginalized people. Seeing myself through Anissa is empowering. Given my own commitment to black love, and my intention to marry a black woman, a brief glance into her complicated relationship with Chenoa is nourishing.Even though reports have surfaced that Anissa’s canonical love interest of Grace Choi has already been cast, I will enjoy these fleeting moments of black lesbian television romance, lust and everything else in between. Goodness knows how long I’ll have to cherish them, until another television show depicts two black women in a relationship beyond a one-episode arc.In the meantime, Black Lightning may just take the cake as not only the blackest show on TV, but also the queerest black show on TV. When he returned to his CNN anchor desk on Tuesday following the accidental drowning of his older sister, L'Tanya "Leisa" Lemon Grimes, Don Lemon fought back tears and expressed gratitude for the outpouring he's received."Many of you noticed that I have not been here, my older sister died unexpectedly last week, and I'm back sitting with you tonight because this is exactly where she would have wanted me to be..." he said as he opened the segment. He later added, "I want all of you to know that your prayers and your words of encouragement have really meant the world to me and my family over the last few days..." Lemon shared that his sister's death served as a reminder that tragedies can bring out the best in people – particularly the immense support he has received from people he typically disagrees with."I think it's important for all Americans to know that something like this, when it happens, it tends to bring out the best in people, even some of my competitors and people I have raging arguments with on television, you think we hate each other but we don't," he said. Omarosa Manigault-Newman – widely known only as Omarosa – is returning to reality television following her abrupt departure from the White House in late December, joining the cast of Celebrity Big Brother which premieres February 7.The former White House staffer gained widespread recognition for her notorious villainess role as a contestant on The Apprentice. Donald Trump “fired” Omarosa on The Apprentice more than a decade ago, and some reports suggest she was fired from her post as director of communications for the Office of Public Liaison.
