Thandiwe Newton is bringing back the traditional spelling of her name.
That the actress, who was commonly known as Thandie Newton, revealed in a British Vogue interview that she’s reclaiming the original spelling her name.
Her name, which means “beloved” in the Zulu, Xhosa and Ndebele languages, became “Thandie” after her name was misspelled in her first acting role.
“The thing I’m most grateful for in our business right now is being in the company of others who truly see me,” Newton said in the interview. “And not to be complicit in the objectification of Black people as ‘others,’ which is what happens when you’re the only one.”
Thandiwe, she said, is “my name. It’s always been my name. I’m taking back what’s mine.”
