Both Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey had their breakthrough in The Color Purple, an adaptation of the classic Alice Walker novel, directed by Steven Spielberg.
The film, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, will return to theaters for one day only on February 23.
Released in 1985, The Color Purple went on to receive 11 Oscar nominations including Best Picture. The movie chronicles the life of Celie (Goldberg), a poor Black woman in 1900s Georgia who experiences sexual abuse at the hands of her father and physical abuse at the hands of her husband. Celie later formulates a friendship with Sofia (Winfrey) and Shug Avery (Margaret Avery), which later evolves into a romance.
Goldberg received a Best Actress nomination for her role as Celie, while Winfrey nabbed a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role as Sofia. Avery also nabbed a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role as Shug Avery.
Outside of the film medium, The Color Purple was also adapted into a successful Broadway play starring Cynthia Erivo, Jennifer Hudson and Danielle Brooks.
