The trailer for Kevin Macdonald’s Cannes-bound documentary Whitney has been released, and it promises to leave no stone unturned while exploring the life of legendary singer Whitney Houston.
According to the release, the film is “an intimate, unflinching portrait of Houston and her family that probes beyond familiar tabloid headlines and sheds new light on the spellbinding trajectory of Houston’s life.” The film features intense interviews with Houston’s family and friends, with questions asked about Houston’s drug use, her relationship with assistant Robyn Crawford and her marriage to New Edition’s Bobby Brown.
“Using never-before-seen archival footage, exclusive demo recordings, rare performances, audio archives and original interviews with the people who knew her best, Oscar-winning filmmaker Kevin Macdonald unravels the mystery behind ‘The Voice,’ who thrilled millions even as she struggled to make peace with her own troubled past,” the release states.
This definitely looks like a documentary that won’t leave a dry eye in the theater while giving unexpected moments of hilarity, such as a scene in which Houston shades Paula Abdul for “singing off-key” in her songs.
Whitney is produced by Simon Chinn, Jonathan Chinn and Lisa Erspamer and executive produced by Pat Houston, Nicole David, Will Clarke, Andy Mayson, Mike Runagall, Zanne Devine, Rosanne Korenberg and Joe Patrick.
