“The Call Up”

Parker Sawyers has deservedly been getting a lot of attention for his performance as a young Barack Obama in the upcoming “Southside with You,” which opens in late August. But before “Southside” comes out, he has a supporting role in another film, the British made hi-tech thriller, “The Call Up,” which opens in the UK on May 20, and will be released on DVD and digital on May 23rd.

Directed by first timer Charles Barker, the film, according to the official synopsis, deals with “a group of elite online gamers who each receives a mysterious invitation to try a state-of-the-art virtual reality video game… [for them] it’s a dream come true and impossible to resist. Arriving at the test site, the group steps into hi-tech gear and prepare for a revolutionary, next-level gaming experience that brings modern warfare to life with frightening realism.”

Now, watching the trailer the first thing you’ll notice is that Sawyers is the only black person among the potential survivors of the film, which immediately beckons that age-old question: “Is the brother going to make it to the end?”

Well, fortunately in this case, this is one of the trailers that gives away everything, and it reveals the answer to that question: “Are you kidding? Of course not! We can’t have any black heroes in movies.”

Take a look for yourself and tell me if “Southside with You” looks even better now:
