On Sept. 10, the body of 19-year-old Kenneka Jenkins was found lifeless in a walk-in freezer at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Rosemont.

Since the tragic incident, many speculations have circulated about the cause of death for the Chicago teen who went missing on Friday, Sept. 8 after attending a party on the ninth floor of the hotel. Suspicions of foul play subsided after Rosemont police released hotel surveillance video showing Kenneka Jenkins staggering into the kitchen area on her own. Now, family and friends of Kenneka Jenkins are asking the FBI to get involved in the investigation.

On Saturday, a crowd of nearly 100 people, led by Jenkins’ mother, Teresa Martin, gathered in Douglas Park for a memorial ceremony. According to The Chicago Tribune, several attendees marched from the memorial site to the FBI’s Chicago field office seeking to demand a federal investigation. Martin said she believes local police are covering up the motive behind her daughter’s death, claiming that the surveillance video was altered. “It doesn’t make sense," Martin told WGN-TV, "I’m not a professional, but the FBI from what I heard ― they are professionals.”

An attorney for the family released this statement:

“Despite request for all evidence, we have only been provided snippets of video, none of which shows Kenneka Jenkins walking into a freezer. The family has not been provided any video or other evidence of Kenneka Jenkins walking into a freezer.”

There has been no official response yet from the FBI or local law enforcement. The medical examiner’s office is awaiting toxicology results before ruling on the cause of death.
