Kalil McCoy was shot to death in 2011 while riding in a car with friends. Nearly eight years later, her assailants will pay for their crime following a wrongful death lawsuit.
According to The Florida Times-Union, a debate ensued between McCoy and 19-year-old Frederick Lee Wade who was in the car with the 20-year-old. The two disagreed about rolling down one of the vehicle's windows. Wade then wielded a gun and shot McCoy in the head, killing the young woman. Following the shooting, Wade and the other assailants in the car discarded her body and later lied about the details concerning her death.
In the trial immediately following her murder, Wade was sentenced to life in prison. Wade's lawyer argued for a retrial, and his life sentence was consequently shortened to 45 years behind bars. Two other men in the car, Kennard Deshun Mahone, 18, and Jonathon Marichal Brooks, 19, were found liable by accessory. They served one year in prison and another year on probation. The final witness, 18-year-old Bernard Mears IV, could not be located by the time of the trial, so his name was omitted from the suit.
In addition to having served time behind bars, the men are now required to pay $495 million in damages to McCoy's family.
As Newsweek reports, the suit, which was filed in 2013, argues that Wade, Mahone and Brooks caused "severe emotional distress" in the wake of McCoy's murder and the legal proceedings that followed. Per News 4 Jax, the McCoy estate will receive the funds from Mahone and Brooks by way of collections.
While it's unclear if McCoy's family will see the full $495 million payout, the victim's mother, Lynette Roebuck, is sure the burden will follow the criminals for the rest of their lives.
"Wade will still have a little bit of life left. But this will always be over your head. If you get a dime, it is not going to be your dime. It will be Kalil's dime," Roebuck asserted.
