Joyce Carter, the owner of Unlimited Styles Salon and Hair Loss Clinic, says she has heard from a dozen people who have been scammed, ABC11 reports.

“I’ve had up to about 12 people come in here (who’ve) been scammed out of money,” Carter said.

Carter said she first learned about the scam when a client came into her salon looking for a specific hairstylist.

Carter said the woman told her that she paid a deposit for the appointment and instructed her to go to the Unlimited Styles Salon for the appointment, in which Carter said she had never heard of the “stylist” in question.

Carter revealed more clients came to the salon, saying the same thing, noting that the women had found the “stylist” on Facebook.

One victim shared that after posting on Facebook that she was looking for a hairstylist to help her achieve a particular look, the scammer commented that they could be of service. However, the victim had to pay a deposit through Cash App.

Carter said asking for a deposit is not generally required for booking an appointment at her salon.

“That’s not a typical thing for a person to have to do to get an appointment for any kind of hair,” Carter explained.

Carter said it scares her and her staff that someone may be pretending to be an employee working at her salon.

“To pretend to be your stylists, and they don’t even exist, and so it scares me and my staff because we’re legitimate stylists,” Carter said. “We work hard to get our cosmetology degree, and just to have someone come in here doing that just put us at risk.”

Carter recommends scheduling hair appointments through a trusted app or contacting the stylist directly.
