Judge Carl Barbier has given final approval for a settlement resulting from the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf Of Mexico. The “grossly negligent” acts by BP resulted in an offshore rig explosion killing 11 workers and 134 million gallons of oil being spilled in the gulf.

It was announced on Monday that Judge Barbier approved the $20 billion settlement.

via CNBC:

The settlement, first announced in July, includes $5.5 billion in civil Clean Water Act penalties and billions more to cover environmental damage and other claims by the five Gulf states and local governments. The money is to be paid out over a 16-year period.

Hopefully, this settlement brings some relief to the many victims of this major catastrophe.
