Season 3 of Finding Your Roots, with host, Henry Louis Gates Jr., a man that represents the true epitome of peak blackness, most of the time, returns to the small screen tonight. This documentary series has become a beacon of Gates’ work, tracing the genealogical origins of famous guests and highlighting the diverse tapestry that makes up the country we live in today.

The show went on a hiatus after it came under some scrutiny with regards to an omission of facts. Ben Affleck, one of the show’s guests, requested that information regarding one of his ancestors being a slave owner be hidden and Gates, as well as PBS, seemingly complied.

Gates and PBS reportedly said that they didn’t intentionally omit the details about Affleck’s slave owner ancestor, but that more interesting information about his family’s past came forward and they simply chose to focus on them instead.

This season we can look forward to getting into the genealogy of folks like Ty Burrell from Modern Family, Sean “Puffy/Diddy/etc” Combs, TGIF queen Shonda Rhimes, and many more of our faves.

With all of this mess behind them, Mr. Gates and PBS can get back on track and make this season one to remember, for the reasons that the show’s premise intended.
