A Winter Park, Florida, man — who was arrested for plotting to carry out a mass shooting at a Walmart — previously published several racist, white supremacist social media posts. 

The suspect, Richard Dean Clayton, was arrested August 9 and charged for written threats to kill or do bodily harm. He wrote a threat on Facebook instructing people to avoid a local Walmart. His plan was to execute a shooting similar to the recent El Paso Walmart shooting that claimed 22 lives. 

According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), the prospective gunman told users via a Facebook post "3 more days of probation left then I get my AR-15 back. Don't go to Walmart next week."

The incendiary post was published a day after the El Paso shooting, local news outlet WESH reports.

Clayton, fresh off probation, has a long history of arrests and legal issues. The Orlando Sentinel reports the alleged white nationalist was arrested and charged for driving while under the influence, disorderly intoxication, carrying a concealed weapon and marijuana possession.

Additionally, he was a staunch supporter of white supremacy and white nationalist ideology, according to investigators. Dating back to 2018, Clayton wrote numerous derogatory social media posts targeting Black, Latinx and Jewish people. There were also several racist memes associated with him, investigators found. 

For example, Clayton obsessively wrote about white genocide and establishing a white ethnostate. 

“Imagine for a moment what we’ve established [our] ethnostate physically removed all the commies and degenerates, and white birthrates are back in the positives,” a post from July 24, 2018 read, according to the FDLE. “[Who] would there be left to make fun of?”

Later that year, the 26-year-old referenced his legal woes while referring to Black people as "monkeys." 

“[A]pparently I have a warrant out too, but my lawyer goes to a hearing for it next week so I might be free soon,” he wrote Oct. 19, 2018, authorities said. “Just packin pistols and beating monkeys.”

During his arrest last Friday, the suspect asked if one of the arresting officers was Hispanic. He was attempting to urinate in the squad car but decided against after learning the officer was white. 

"They are what is wrong with this country…they come in and are ruining everything,” Clayton said, according to the officer.

WESH reports Clayton had posts featuring a swastika, images that depicted white men as "patriots" wearing stars and stripes while holding an AR-15 and Donald Trump imagery. Due to Clayton's previous posts, the FDLE was confident a terrorist attack was imminent. 

The prospective domestic terrorist is currently held in the Orange County Jail on a $15,000 bond.
