A Florida teacher stumbled upon a mysterious container shortly after Election Day.

On Thursday, Lakeisha Sorey discovered a box labeled “Provisional Ballot Box” in the storage room of Sunshine Elementary School, apparently left behind by election workers.

“I went into the area that we use for storage and saw it in there,” Williams told the New York Post.

The teacher said that she did not touch or look at the contents inside the box. According to the Sun-Sentinel, Sorey called her friend State Rep. Shevrin Jones, who immediately contacted the Broward Supervisor of Elections Office. Jones was informed that the box most likely did not contain ballots.

“I was shocked about it,” Jones stated. “I don’t think you’d lock up extra ballot paper. I’m hoping someone will at least go verify and make sure there are no ballots inside the box.”

U.S Florida Senator Marco Rubio shared a tweet about the incident stating, "just let that sink in for a moment."

The National Conference of State Legislation states that provisional ballots are given when a voter's eligibility is uncertain and are typically kept separate for counting after the election.

Votes are still being counted in the state as state law requires a recount of votes when margins are less than 0.5 percent.

Gov. Rick Scott filed a lawsuit against the Broward County election supervisor as votes continue to come in despite a declared win on Tuesday against incumbent Bill Nelson. The small percentage gap between each candidates votes was 0.2 percent, triggering a recount.

In the state's gubernatorial race, Republican Ron DeSantis was declared the winner on Tuesday, but a state-mandated recount is pending against Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum due to another small vote margin — 0.4 percent.

Provisional ballots for Florida’s midterm election needed to be in by 5 p.m. Thursday.

The box has since been removed from the school.
