For your Monday
amusement, let’s watch a white guy squirm in his seat and look like a total fool
when he confuses two black actors.

It all
happened this morning on Los Angeles’ KTLA’s
Channel 5 Morning News
show, as entertainment reporter Sam Rubin interviewed Samuel L. Jackson, who was on the show
to promote the upcoming remake of Robocop, coming out this Friday.

Rubin, who’s been a entertainment reporter for as long as I can remember, got Jackson
confused with Laurence Fishburne and
that Kia Super Bowl commercial, in
which he spoofs his Morpheus character
from the Matrix movies.

But hey, I
guess, to Rubin, one looks just like the other, so what’s the difference? Who’s
going notice?

Well Jackson did, understandably so, and was quite taken aback, and gave Rubin a good what for.

Of course Rubin
immediately apologized, and later gave a formal statement, trying to get himself out of a
very embarrassing situation. He said that:

“We
start right now with the beauty and the occasional pain of live television.
First and foremost, I do know who Samuel L. Jackson is. I’ve interviewed him
several times over the years, but never quite like the conversation we just had”.

Then he added
that:

“I
indicated to Samuel that I’d seen him during the Super Bowl, and he thought
that I had confused him with the commercial Laurence Fishburne had done for a
car company. Of course a “Captain America” ad had also run during the Super
Bowl, but I immediately felt so dumb, I didn’t bring that up — and he gave me
the shellacking that was well deserved…
I
pride myself on the fact that – unlike a lot of people who do this kind of work – more often than not, I really do know what I’m talking about. But I didn’t 30
minutes ago, and I’m really embarrassed about it, and I very much apologize to
Samuel L. Jackson and anyone else who was offended for what was a very amateur
mistake.”

I don’t know
about you, but I’m not buying it. What do you say?

Here’s video
of the awkward moment:
