The 2020 Republican National Convention kicked off on Monday with President Donald Trump aiming to galvanize support for his re-election campaign.

After Democrats executed a successful, virtual convention last week, Republicans have co-opted similar tactics. The Trump-focused RNC tapped Black speakers for endorsements and credibility, following the DNC’s programming that was intent on bringing diverse voices to speak on issues important to their voting block like police brutality and policy reform.

In a night highlighted by Sen. Tim Scott’s keynote address, former NFL running back Herschel Walker and Georgia state Rep. Vernon Jones, a Democrat, joined a contingent of Black influencers who gave remarks supporting Trump and his presidency.

Here is what Black Trump advocates said about him and his campaign at the RNC Monday:

Former NFL Star Defends Friendship With Trump, Says He's Not A Racist

Walker, a three-time All-American at the University of Georgia during the ‘80s, defended his relationship with the president and sided with Trump on athletes not protesting during the national anthem.

“Just because someone loves and respects the flag, our National Anthem, and our country doesn’t mean they don’t care about social justice. I care about all of those things, and so does Donald Trump,” Walker said. “He shows how much he cares about social justice and the Black community through his actions. And his actions speak louder than any stickers or slogans on a jersey.”

After his speech, Walker told Fox News that Trump's words are often misunderstood by the masses and people would connect better with him if they prioritized his actions.

"I don't think people really know Donald Trump. I think they look at Donald Trump from a tweet or look at from what he says, and they're not looking at what he does," Walker said.

Walker said he built a close relationship with Trump when the president purchased the New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League in 1984. The former pro athlete said player said it hurts him deeply when people accuse the president of being a bigot.

“People who think that don’t know what they are talking about. Growing up in the Deep South, I have seen racism up close. I know what it is. And it isn’t Donald Trump,” Walker said.

Rep. Jones Attacks Own Party For Pandering To Black People

From the stage at the Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C., Rep. Jones accused fellow Democrats of cultivating a “mental plantation” among Black voters and doubled down on his support of Trump’s campaign.

“The Democratic Party does not want Black people to leave their mental plantation,” Jones said. “We are free people with free minds.”

He also said Democrats have been pandering to the Black community, instead of implementing policy and law to advance their quality of life. He argued that, unlike Trump, Democrats want to defund the police and have been supporting violent protest behavior.

“The Democratic Party has become infected with the pandemic of intolerance, bigotry, socialism, anti-law enforcement bias and a dangerous tolerance for people who attack others, destroy property and terrorize our own communities,” he said.

Jones got his start in politics running for the state House in 1990, according to The Atlanta Journal Constitution. In 2008, President Barack Obama called him out for appropriating his image on a campaign flyer Obama didn't approve.

"I do not endorse him; I have not endorsed him," Obama told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "He put my picture on his literature without asking me."

Since then, Jones' career has been mired in controversy, and he recently made noise on both sides of the table for going against party allegiances in endorsing Trump.

Black Republican Congressional Candidate Says Democrats Take Black Vote For Granted

Kim Klacik, a Republican candidate running for office in Maryland's 7th Congressional district, attacked Joe Biden and his party for their public relations gaffs in relation to the Black community.

“Joe Biden believes we can't think for ourselves, that the color of someone's skin dictates their political views," Klacik said in the segment streamed from Charlotte Monday. "We're not buying the lies anymore, you and your party have ignored us for too long."

She warned Black voters are growing frustrated with Democrats and "the days of blindly supporting" them are ending.

The policies put in place by DeSantis and the Republican-controlled legislature created an atmosphere that led the NAACP to issue a 2023 travel advisory warning Black people not to visit the state. Since President Donald Trump returned to the White House in 2025, he has been implementing a set of anti-diversity policies at the national level that have strictly interpreted the Supreme Court’s anti-affirmative action ruling; under Trump administration guidelines, any race-conscious programming on college campuses could be viewed as illegal.

Florida’s anti-diversity policies laid the groundwork for other states like Texas to adopt restrictive policies toward their schools, and Florida’s policies also served as a precursor to restrictions being implemented at a national level. However, as we know, the Game of Thrones shows like to mix up ages and generations, so this doesn’t necessarily mean these characters aren’t Rhae and Daella.

The case for this not being Rhae and Daella? It seems odd that Prince Matarys, the other son of Baelor and Valarr’s brother, wouldn’t be there, no? Or maybe he just didn’t journey to Ashford Meadow for the tourney while his cousins did. It’s not like he could travel over by dragon, right?

In canon, both Rhae and Daella are married off to unnamed houses and end up having children. We don’t know exactly who they were married to, but one of them (probably Rhae) married into House Tarth — and could have had a romantic tryst with Dunk, had a baby, and this is how Brienne of Tarth could be connected to Dunk.

Manfred Dondarrion also attends Baelor’s funeral

Of note, the Targaryens who may or may not be Rhae and Daella are also standing directly behind Manfred Dondarrion (Daniel Monks), a knight of House Dondarrion, whom we met earlier in the season. He is likely there because he’s related to Jena Dondarrion, Baelor’s late wife and the mother of Prince Valarr and Prince Matarys.

What notable Targaryens of the time weren’t at the funeral

Of the immediate Targaryen family members of Baelor, missing — and not speculated to be the unnamed Targaryens we saw — from the funeral would be, of the characters introduced properly in the series, Prince Daeron, aka Daeron the Drunken (Henry Ashton) and Aerion Targaryen (Finn Bennett).

Of unseen characters, there’s the aforementioned Prince Matarys, Prince Rhaegel Targaryen, brother of Baelor, Aerys I and Maekar, as well as their father, King Daeron II Targaryen. There’s also Rhaegel’s children: Prince Aelor Targaryen, Princess Aelora Targaryen and Princess Daenora Targaryen (future wife of Aerion) — though the timeline of their ages, or even whether they were born at this time, is somewhat unclear. There are probably many more distant relatives, but there are just so many Targs.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is streaming in full on HBO/HBO Max. Season 1’s penultimate episode ended with the tragic death of Prince Baelor “Breakspear” Targaryen (Bertie Carvel), heir to the throne, leaving everyone at Ashford Meadow gagged in the finale, which is Episode 6. Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall (Peter Claffey) was even planning to serve Baelor after he was triumphant in the trial

Prince Maekar Targaryen (Sam Spruell) is trying to figure out how to move his family forward after his son Prince Aerion Targaryen’s (Finn Bennett) actions pretty much led them to this moment (or we can argue that Egg pretending to be a squire led to this). Though his brother has died from this Trial of the Seven, Maekar has a proposition for Dunk: let Prince Aegon V “Egg” Targaryen (Dexter Sol Ansell) be his squire…but there’s a twist.

Learn more about what Maekar asks of Dunk, as wellas the mid-credits scene.

What’s in the Season 1 post-credits scene of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’

In what’s technically a mid-credits scene, which airs right after the title card, A Knight of the Nine Kingdoms (a fun poke at Egg’s correction to Dunk), we see Maekar looking for Egg.

While this isn’t a traditional post-credits, or even a mid-credits scene…we’re just going to call it that to give it a name, it’s noteworthy. Back at Ashford Meadow, the Targaryens are leaving, but then the fact that Egg is missing, again, has come to his attention. He said, “Where the f**k is he?”

Now, just a few moments ago in the finale, we’d seen Egg approach Dunk before he took off and let him know that his father said that he needed to squire for him. Dunk, seemingly into the fact that his idea worked on Maekar, is pleased, and they hit the road. However, looks like Maekar didn’t actually approve of Egg going. As we know, Maekar wasn’t too thrilled with the idea of Egg living as a peasant, and his first offer was for Dunk to go to Targaryen’s summer retreat, Summerhall, and have Egg squire for him there.

This isn’t what happens in the novella

In the first of three (so far) Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, Maekar actually agrees with Dunk and sends Egg off with him. So the fact that he doesn’t know that Egg went off with Dunk is a deviation and change from the source material.

What does this mean? We don’t exactly know yet; maybe, though he didn’t know that Egg left, Maekar is truly fine with him and will believe this is the best plan.
